GTINs for Distributors
Within the Global Data Synchronization Network, distributors will encounter special situations when dealing with GTINS.

Click here for interactive tool detailing GTIN assignment rules.

Distributing Items from Foreign Manufacturers

When distributing items from a foreign manufacturer, you will often find that the items you have received do not have a proper bar code symbol (e.g., EAN/UCC-12 (UPC), EAN/UCC-13, EAN/UCC-14, EAN/UCC-8).

In order to create standard GTIN for the Global Data Synchronization Network for any item you are distributing, you will need to first create a proper bar code symbol. In order for your company to print UPC Bar Code Symbols, your company must become a member of the Uniform Code Council, Inc. (UCC). When you become a member, your company will be assigned an identification number for your company's use (your Company Prefix). You will need this number to create your own UPCs. To accomplish this click here: UCC: Learn How Build Your U.P.C. Bar Code. After building your UPC Bar Codes, you may simply follow the rules for Distributing Items from Domestic Vendors or Manufacturers that follow.

Distributing Items from Domestic Vendors or Manufacturers

When distributing items that derive from a domestic vendor or manufacturer that do not already have a GDSN Item Level GTIN, the vast majority of the items you receive should have one of the following types of bar code symbols.

    EAN/UCC-12 (UPC) (Twelve Digits)
  • Six digits representing the UCC Company Prefix
  • Five digits representing the Item Reference number
  • One digit representing the Check Digit
    Or
  • Seven digits representing the UCC Company Prefix
  • Four digits representing the Item Reference number
  • One digit representing the Check Digit
    Or
  • Eight digits representing the UCC Company Prefix
  • Three digits representing the Item Reference number
  • One digit representing the Check Digit
    Or
  • Nine digits representing the UCC Company Prefix
  • Two digits representing the Item Reference number
  • One digit representing the Check Digit
    EAN/UCC-13 (Thirteen Digits)
  • Twelve digits containing the EAN.UCC Company Prefix and Item
  • Reference number
  • One digit representing the Check Digit
    EAN/UCC-14 (Fourteen Digits)
  • One digit representing the Indicator digit to indicate packaging level
  • Twelve digits containing the EAN.UCC Company Prefix and Item Reference number
  • One digit representing the Check Digit
    EAN/UCC-8 (Eight Digits)
  • Seven digits containing a EAN.UCC Company Prefix and Item Reference number
  • One digit representing the Check Digit
For any item you receive from a vendor or manufacturer that does not already have an Item Level GTIN but employs one of the previous bar code structures, you must create your own item level GTIN. To accomplish this, please refer back to the GTINs for Vendors and Manufacturers page.

If you have received product from a vendor or manufacturer for distribution that already has an Item Level GTIN, you my use that Item Level GTIN to create your company-specific GTINs for item hierarchies. You will find that you may encounter many situations in which you will need to create your own company-specific GTINs.
